The Fresh Prince Gets a Dramatic Reimagining in the Trailer for Bel-Air

This is the story all about how Carlton’s a jerk and Will packs heat now—at least according that’s how the story goes according to the new superfan-made trailer from director Morgan Cooper. Just to be sure, we did a quick revisit of the original opening sequence, and yeah—in the ’90s original, Will got caught tagging a wall and getting in “one little fight” before he loaded up to live with the Banks family. But in the masterfully remade trailer, Cooper’s version of events is intense: guns, police brutality, and privilege. As intense as the remake looks, Bel-Air also looks like an incredible movie. Will shows up to California in a “What Would Meek Mill Do?” sweatshirt after getting arrested by police. The staples are all there, too: Jazz and his secret handshake, a shopping-obsessed Hillary, and a hard-ass Uncle Phil who isn’t here for hijinks. Granted, Cooper’s vision for Bel-Air is a hell of a lot more realistic. Carlton may still be dancing in this version, but he’s a privileged snob who asks Will, “How are we related again?” In short, the worst part of Bel-Air’s viral trailer is that it’s not leading to an actual movie.

Director Morgan Cooper dropped the project on Instagram over this past weekend, with the caption, “Like most 90’s kids, I grew up watching Fresh Prince. Even as a kid, I always thought there was more to the story… so I decided to make this…” The trailer has been shared all over social media. Now we just have to figure out how to get Sun Squared Media, the company that Cooper worked with to create the trailer, to get money behind this and turn it into the real thing.
