What a performance in the biggest game of the season
While Manchester City secured all three points against Liverpool through goals from Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane, one other player stood out.
Pep Guardiola’s side were unexpected favourites going into this game following their recent form.
The sky blues have had a disappointing four weeks or so, losing games to Chelsea and Crystal Palace while looking lacklustre in other performances.
Meanwhile, their opponents were going strength to strength over the Christmas period.
Liverpool won every game in the month of December, against some difficult teams too.
They beat Everton 1-0 in the Merseyside derby at the beginning of the month, while also beating Manchester United 3-1 away from home.
The most impressive of all, however, came against Arsenal as they won 5-1.
Though, none of that mattered on the night.
Man City well and truly back in the race
That is because Manchester City walked away with all three points on Thursday evening.
Guardiola’s side started the game extremely brightly, pressing high and fast as they looked to play Liverpool at their own game.
While there were no clear-cut chances, they were very much on top.
However, it was Liverpool who had the biggest chance to strike first.
Sadio Mane latched onto a through ball from Mohamed Salah before hitting the post.

Though, the ball nearly ended up in the net in dramatic fashion after a blunder from Ederson.
Despite how close Liverpool came, it was Manchester City who struck first.
Sergio Aguero scored from an acute angle to give Guardiola’s side the lead.
A goal from Roberto Firmino then levelled the game up before Leroy Sane’s goal handed City all three points.
Despite not scoring a goal, there was an incredible amount of praise for one player.
That man is Man City midfielder Fernandinho.
The Brazilian was a brick wall today, marshalling Liverpool’s midfield all by himself while also having a huge affect on the City attack.
Now, everyone is raving about his performance of social media with some labelling him the best defensive midfielder in the Premier League and Europe.
Fernandinho is the best player on the pitch by a mile…

Whatever the result, this has been a super-human performance by Fernandinho against a powerhouse Liverpool midfield.

You’ll do well to see a better 45min display by a centre midfielder all season than what we’ve seen from Fernandinho tonight. #ManCityvLFC

Quite honestly the best defensive midfield performance from Fernandinho today that the Premier League has ever seen. Absolutely brilliant fromm start to finish, monstrous in the tackle and first to ever loose ball. Amazing.
